Indian agriculture is characterized by small and scattered holding, sugarcane cultivation is no exception. There is heavy demand of labour and machinery throughout the sugarcane crop cycle. Day by day, with increasing industrialization, agriculture labour force shows decreasing trend. All activities in sugarcane cultivation, harvesting and transport require huge labour force. Today’s labour mentality and financial risk involved is an alarming situation to go for mechanization in sugarcane. At present, NSL owns 8 sugarcane harvesters. For other mechanization activities, such as land preparation, furrow opening, earthing-up, trash mulching and stubble shaving, NSL works through entrepreneurship model. At each zone within the command area of each mill, resource center has been established for offering services to sugarcane growers on paid basis.
